Research and Interests:

The common factor in my research projects is population genetics. Most of the projects are also conservation-oriented and often involve applied aspects in the management of populations.

Research projects I’m involved in are:

• conservation genetics of the lesser white-fronted goose Anser erythropus (with Juha Merilä, Tomas Aarvak and Anna-Carin Lundqvist), see also http://www.wwf.fi/ymparisto/uhanalaiset_lajit/kotimaiset/kiljuhanhi.html (In Finnish)
http://www.wwf.fi/english/finland/lesser_white_fronted/the_species.html (In English)
http://www.piskulka.net/ (In English)

• taxonomy of the bean goose A. fabalis and pink-footed goose A. brachyrhynchus complex (with Konstantin Litvin, Thomas Heinicke and Tomas Aarvak)

• domestication history of the geese A. anser

• population genetics of large carnivores (with Jouni Aspi and others; see these pages for more details)

• population genetics and sexual selection in Drosophila virilis group species (with Jaana Liimatainen)

• ancient DNA: Human-animal relationships among Finland’s Sámi 1000 - 1800 AD (together with Jouni Aspi, Milton Núñez and Jari Okkonen)

I’m currently involved in supervision of six Ph.D. students and five undergraduate students.
